Expedition Silk Road: Treasures from the Hermitage

The Hermitage provides a glimpse of the long-lost civilisations along the Silk Road, the ancient trade network which ran almost 7,000 km from China to the Mediterranean.

The 250 items on show all belong to the Hermitage collection and include murals, sculpture, precious silks, silver, glass, gold and terracotta.

The artefacts were excavated by Russian expeditions in the 19th and 20th centuries from 13 different regions along on the Silk Road, and are associated with a variety of kingdoms and cultures.

The Silk Road predates the Christian era and connected the Roman Empire with other great civilisations and dynasties in India, Persia and China.
