Gabriele Mnter: The Search for Expressionism.
23 June-11 Sept 2005. This is the first ever museum exhibition in Britain of work by German painter Gabriele Mnter. At the Courtauld Institute gallery throughout the summer the exhibition includes 20 paintings drawn from between 1906 and 1917 when the artist was at her peak, following her evolution from a student of Impressionism to her bolder, colour-drenched Expressionist works. Mnter was born in Berlin in 1877 and only started painting at the age of 20 after joining the Ladies School of Art in Dusseldorf. She played a key role in the Blaue Reiter art group and the development of German Expressionism working with many avant-garde painters including her lover Wassily Kandinsky. Most of the paintings on display are from the collection of the Stdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. Admission costs 5 (concessions available). Open daily 10.00-18.00.
