30 January - 3 May 2009. Known by many in the artworld as "the greatest living painter," 77 year old Gerhard Richter is Germany's most prominent artist. For six decades he has explored a wide range of subject matter, encompassing every type of genre while steadfastly refusing to establish any one artistic style for himself, famously writing: "I am not following an agenda, a system, a direction: I have no programme, no style, no issues." Despite this somewhat anti-establishment stance, his work is, ironically, instantly recognisable. The Albertina Palace currently displays seventy of his paintings, many on loan from international museums, in what is a major retrospective of a life's work.
