8 April-28 August 2005. This major exhibition at Vienna's Albertina Museum includes numerous and diverse genres of masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries covering the period from Goya to Picasso, from a private collection shown publicly in Austria for the first time. Some 160 paintings, drawings and sculptures by greats such Czanne, Degas, Giacometti, Ingres, Monet, Manet, Matisse and Seurat are on display. The Albertina Museum itself is worth a visit while you are there. Housed in an 18th century fortress and recently reopened to the public, the palace has undergone extensive modernisation and restructuring having suffered considerable damage during world war two. The cellar has been converted to provide storage for the art collection and space for part of of the Austrian national library. Tickets cost 9 and 7.50 with concessions.
