17-18 Dec 2005. Christmas would not be the same without at least one performance of George Frideric Handels Messiah, and indeed Copenhagen has several. This concert at the Christians Kirke (church) is performed by the Tritonus choir with musicians and vocalists from the Royal Danish Orchestra, including Susanne Elmark (soprano), Hanne Fischer (alto), Niels Jrgen Riis (tenor) and Per Hyer (bass). Composed in London in 1741-2 and first performed in Dublin in 1742, Messiah, a Sacred Oratorio has become the German-born composers best-known work; though initially envisaged as a Lenten piece, the Messiah" is now performed throughout Europe during the Christmas season. The libretto was selected from Old and New Testament texts by literary scholar and editor of Shakespeares plays, Charles Jennens (1700-73). Master of every kind of musical genre, Handel specialized in operas and oratorios during his 50 or so years of residence in England. Admission Dkk175-125. Concerts start at 19.00.
