31 Jan - 7 Jun 2009. ARKEN Museum of Modern Art was opened in 1996 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe. Now firmly established, the museum houses contemporary Danish, Nordic and international art and offers a steady stream of important exhibitions, including the current show of 53 selected works of French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. The collection is on loan from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem which is closed due to an extensive renovation programme.

The impressionist movement was characterized by the immediate visual, emotive impression gained by a painting and by the use of primary colours with visible brush strokes. Post-Impressionism was a reaction to, and a continuation of, Impressionism. Artists from both movements who are included in this exhibition need no introduction: Degas, Rodin, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Van Gogh, C
