Kerry James Marshall: Painting and Other Stuff

This body of work by contemporary American artist Kerry James Marshall is billed as one of the most comprehensive ever assembled.

Based in Chicago, Marshall is from Alabama, and the central theme of his work has always been documenting the struggle and history of African-Americans.

His career has been dominated by cultural, social and political issues affecting the black community in America, commenting “You can’t be born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955 and grow up in South Central [Los Angeles] near the Black Panthers headquarters, and not feel like you’ve got some kind of social responsibility.”
