22 March-11 June 2006. Over 140 etchings by the 17th-century Dutch master Rembrandt Van Rijn are currently on display at Spains national library. The exhibition, entitled Rembrandt: The Light of Shadow, includes portraits of the artists wife Saskia, self-portraits, etchings on religious themes and landscapes. Many of the works are shown in progress together with the original plates, as with the etching of The Great Jewish Bride, shown in five different stages. All the etchings were printed by Rembrandt himself. Drawn from the collections of the Bibliothque national de France and the Biblioteca Nacional de Espaa, the exhibition presents many of Rembrandts works for the first time in Madrid. Admission free.
