30 May-15 July 2006. Gaetano Donizettis comic opera in two acts, LElisir damore, is presented by the Opra national de Paris in a new production directed by Edward Gardner. First performed in Milan in 1832, the work revolves around a classic love triangle, with Adina, a wealthy young landowner, being courted by both Nemorino, a simple country lad, and Belcore, a sergeant in charge of the garrison stationed in the local village. The arrival of Doctor Dulcamara, a travelling medicine man, and his famous elixir complicates the plot still further. The libretto is by Felice Romani, based on Eugne Scribes novel Le Philtre dAuber. The part of Adina is shared by Heidi Grant Murphy and Ekaterina Syurina, while Dulcamara is played by Ambrogio Maestri and Ruggero Raimondi. Sung in Italian, the performance at the Opra Bastille lasts 2 hours 40 minutes with one interval. Admission 130-5. Premiere 30 May 20.00. Performances 2, 7, 14, 20, 23, 27 June & 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15 July at 20.00. Matine 11 June at 14.30.
