4-23 Dec 2006. Jacques Offenbachs opera Les Contes dHoffmann based on three tales by German writer and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann is presented by the Teatro Real in a new co-production with Turins Teatro Regio, Thtre du Capitole de Toulouse and the New Israel Opera. First performed in Paris at the Opra-Comique in 1881, The Tales of Hoffmann recounts Hoffmanns search for the Ideal Woman assisted by his friend and alter-ego Nicklausse. The women he meets all leave him broken-hearted and it is not until Nicklausse reveals his true identity that true love can blossom. Marcus Haddock and Aquiles Machado share the role of Hoffmann, while Ekaterina Gubanova plays the part of Nicklausse. Other cast members include Giorgio Surjan, Desire Rancatore, Isabel Rey and Batrice Uria-Monzn. Nicolas Joel directs, with set designs by Ezio Frigerio and costumes by Franca Squarciapino. Musical direction is by Emmanuel Villaume. Admission Opening night 244-17, under-26s 6.80. Other nights 141-16, under-26s 6.40.
