21 July - 14 Aug 2005.
Set in the decadent aristocratic world of pre-Revolutionary Paris, Loclos' epistolary novel describes the cruel games played by arch-seducers Marquise de Merteuil and her ex-lover Vicomte Valmont. Having premiered in Tokyo to wild critical acclaim, this ballet is another project from the brilliant Adam Cooper, who conceived and choreographed the show, and who stars as the treacherous Valmont. Intensely sexy costumes, frantic and physical dancing, and a glorious mirrored set all point to one of the first great ballets of the 21st century. Cooper's masterful work may well be staged a hundred years from now, but the chance to see it on its first performances, with the man himself starring, should not be missed.
