18-19 June 2005.
Held around Nollendorfplatz in the heart of western Berlin, the Lesbian & Gay Street Fair will host parties and 500 metres of bars for an expected 300,000 gays, lesbians and friends. The event will feature Europes largest gathering of gay firms, self-help groups, and special project organisations, and national figures will also be put on the spot in the daily "Wild Sofa" interview session with a leading journalist. The event was first held in 1992, against a backdrop of rising anti-gay assaults, when 25 gay publicans came together to form a self-defence association. Since then, the events growth and popularity is proof of the improved position of lesbians and gays in the German capital. The festival also kick-starts Gay Pride week in Berlin, leading up to Christopher Street Day.
