Lluïsa Vidal: la pintora modernista

The Museu del Modernisme Català dedicates an exhibition to the work of Lluïsa Vidal (1876-1918), one of the few women artists in the male-dominated Catalan modernism. Vidal studied art in Paris where she became aware of the emerging feminist movement at the turn of the century.

By the time she returned to Barcelona in 1902 her feminist views led her to get involved in a number of women's causes while gaining growing respect for her paintings. Vidal documented daily life in her portraits, as well as illustrating magazines, and in 1911 she opened her own art academy.

She died at 42 from the Spanish flu pandemic. Along with Joaquim Mir Trinxet, Pichot, Oleguer Junyent and a young Picasso, Vidal is considered one of the second generation of Spain's Modernista painters.
