2 June -1 Nov 2009. As well as being an essential centre for research into Spanish culture, the Biblioteca Nacional offers its visitors a comprehensive programme of cultural events throughout the year. One such event is an exhibition in tribute to Louis Braille, the inventor of the system of reading and writing for the blind. Braille became blind at an early age and later improved upon a secret system used by soldiers on the battlefield into what we now know as 'Braille'. The exhibition covers the period from the end of the 18th century to the 1930s and highlights the successful education of blind people as a result of Braille.
