Bob Wilson directs an international cast in the Opra national de Paris production of Puccinis famous opera, Madame Butterfly at Opra Bastille. Composed in 1904, this 3-act tragedy is based on a novel by John Luther Long. It tells the story of a young Japanese girl who is seduced and then abandoned by an American officer. The libretto is by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica and this production is performed in Italian. Hui He and Liping Zhang share the part of Cio-Cio San and Marco Berti plays the role of F B Pinkerton. Musical direction is by Dennis Russell Davies. Bob Wilsons stark, essential staging mirrors the emotional environment of this Japanese tragedy to perfection. The opera runs for 3 hours with one interval. Admission 130-5.
