Mexican Art at the Louvre: Masterpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries

The Louvre showcases colonial-era Mexican art, highlighting an area of its collection which the museum intends to expand in the future.

The 11 masterpieces on show include large-scale works such as "The Flood" and "The Lactation of Saint Dominic" by Cristóbal Villalpando, and "Flight from Egypt" by Juan Rodríguez Juárez.

Organisers say that "New World" art remains little known in France, and that this exhibition will examine the "close yet independent relationship" between Latin American art and Spanish art.

To allow visitors to judge the similarities and contrasts for themselves, the Mexican works will be displayed among Spanish paintings of the same period from the Louvre's permanent collection.

Wed-Mon 09.00-18.00. Wed-Fri 09.00-22.00
