2-19 Oct 2006. Barcelonas Gran Teatre del Liceu and Oper Leipzig present a new production of Mozarts opera seria - La Clemenza di Tito. Based on a libretto by Metastasio, the opera was written in 1791, the year of Mozarts death. The action is set in imperial Rome in the first century AD, with the Emperor Tito (Titus), a benevolent and generous despot, object of an assassination plot devised by Vitellia, the ambitious daughter of his predecessor. Tito is played by internationally acclaimed Canadian-German tenor Michael Schade, with French soprano Vernique Gens in the role of Vitellia. La Clemenza di Tito is directed by Francisco Negrn, with set design by Es Devlin. Musical direction is by Sebastian Weigle. Reduced-price performances are sung by an alternative cast.
