28 Nov-2 Dec 2006. The Cit de la Musique hosts three concerts by major contemporary jazz names from New York. First up is Sex Mob, an experimental four-piece jazz band featuring Steven Bernstein on slide trumpet, playing an eclectic mix of post-modern waltzes, dub-echoed free jazz and re-arranged pop (28 Nov in the museum amphitheatre). A concert entitled Moonchild by composer and sax player John Zorn is next, with Trevor Dunn on bass, Joey Baron on drums and singer Mike Patton performing their unique blend of free jazz, improvised and modern classical music (30 Nov in the concert hall). The brief season ends with a concert by the Maria Schneider Orchestra, which first appeared at Visiones in Greenwich Village in 1993. Now acknowledged as the best big band sound around, the orchestra has toured throughout Europe as well as playing concerts in Brazil and Macau. Maria Schneider, conductor and composer, heads up the 17-piece band featuring Steve Wilson on alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet, flute, alto flute and bass flute (2 Dec in the concert hall). Admission 22. Concerts at 20.00 on 28 & 30 Nov, at 16.30 on 2 Dec.
