Nordic Dawn. Modernism's Awakening in Finland 1890-1920
15 June-2 October 2005. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see 100 masterpieces of Finnish painting, a less well known branch of European art, from the early part of the twentieth century. With the cooperation of Helsinkis Ateneum Art Museum and the Den Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Belvedere Gallery Nordic Dawn brings together paintings that helped to shape the Finnish national identity on the threshold of independence from Tsarist Russia. While Viennese painters of the early 1900s held their Finnish contemporaries in high esteem, the countrys artistic heritage has rarely been shown in Austria. Among the works on display in the exhibition is Spring by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, one of the most famous Finnish painters, which was acquired by the Belvedere back in 1901. Admission costs 7.50 (5 with concessions). Tue-Sun from 10.00 to 18.00.
