20 May-3 June. Emma Donoghue's stage adaptation of her award-winning book Room, based on the 2008 Fritzl case in Austria. The play shows how Ma (Witney White) her five-year-old son Little Jack (played variously by three young actors) cope with being held captive in a small room.
Donoghue's book was also adapted into a film, by Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, whose mother character Brie Larson won an Oscar in 2016 for Best Actress. Unlike the film version, the stage adaptation includes the voice of "Big Jack" who articulates the inner thoughts of his younger self.
The production has been described by The Times as "compelling viewing...a triumph." After London the play will be staged at the Dundee Rep Theatre in Scotland, from 13-17 June, and at Dublin's Abbey Theatre from 24 June-22 July.
