12 Dec 2005-12 Jan 2006. The Opra National de Paris Opra Bastille presents Nureyevs staging of Swan Lake, first performed at the Opra in 1984. The famous ballet is based on an ancient Nordic legend, which tells of princesses who have been turned into swans, and has given rise to the myth of the ballerina-swan the ballerina par excellence. Tchaikovskys beautiful music accompanies the story of young Prince Seigfried and his love for Odette, the Swan Queen, who has been put under a spell by the evil sorcerer, von Rothbart. The lake has been formed by the tears of the grieving parents of all the young girls who have suffered the same fate and been turned into swans. At the very moment when Seigfried is about to declare his love for her and break the spell, Odette is snatched from his embrace by the sorcerer and the prince is left alone by the lake. The Ballet is performed by the Corps de Ballet and the Prima ballerinas of the Opra. The Orchestra of the Opra National de Paris is directed by Vello Phn.
