10 Sept-2 Oct 2005. With choreography by Javier Latorre and stage direction by Emilio Hernndez, Tarantos is a passionate tale of love and hate between two young gypsies. It is based on the book 'La historia de los Tarantos' by Alfredo Maas and the film 'Los Tarantos', which received an Oscar nomination for best foreign film in 1963. "Beyond these two sources, says Emilio Hernndez, I drew a great deal from 'Romeo and Juliet'. When we premiered in Barcelona, many people told me that the production reminded them of 'Les Miserables', though I think ours is more fraught. We were trying to portray the marginalisation of gypsies, from love stories in a Spain of hunger from the hatred between rival families to obsessive eternal love".
