5 March-15 April 2006. Written in 1791, Mozarts popular opera Die Zauberflte the Magic Flute is a fairy-tale work with a complicated plot. Haydn had just introduced the composer to freemasonry and the opera is full of the ideas, ideals and symbols of the Masons. To prove their virtue and faithfulness, the hero Prince Tamino and his beloved, Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, undergo various rituals, tests and initiations. Tamino is helped by a magic flute and his friend the bird-catcher Papageno. In the end good triumphs over evil through the power of love.
