The Maya. Language of Beauty

12 April-7 Aug. Exhibition of around 300 sculptures and ceramics relating to the Maya people, a Mesoamerican civilisation and one of the oldest cultures in the world.

Central to the exhibition is the body and how it was expressed in the art of the Maya, along with the civilisation's relationship with religion, astronomy, music and dance. In order to achieve their ideal of beauty, and to please their gods, the Maya altered their hairstyles and gave themselves tooth jewellery, scars and tattoos.

The ancient decorative pieces on display in the Berlin exhibition include many of Mexico's national treasures.
