21 May - 13 September 2009. Thomas Ruff is a German photographer of international acclaim. He is known for his diverse range of subject matter which encompasses everything from people to architecture to the universe. His first exhibition in Austria, the Kunsthalle Wien presents 'Surfaces, Depths', a comprehensive solo exhibition of 150 of the artist's works. Included are his large-scale 1980s portraits, his architectural photographs of Herzog & de Meuron buildings and, most interestingly, his digitally processed images of the planet Saturn and its moons. Referring to the endless possibilities offered by the medium of photography, Ruff states: 'The reality in front of the camera is reality of the first degree, the representation of the reality in front of the camera is reality of the second degree, and then come any number of possible gradations and distortions.'
