5 Sept-8 Dec 2008. For the first time after half a century, Vienna dedicates a comprehensive exhibition to Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), which offers a new perspective on the artist as a painter and draughtsman. On display are 50 paintings and 100 major watercolours and drawings on loan from over 60 countries. They examine the artistic connections between van Gogh's expressive draughtsmanship and his radically new use of colour and demonstrate how the expressive brush work in his paintings was influenced by his dynamic draughtsmanship. In fact, Van Gogh originally wanted to become a draughtsman and illustrator but ended up revolutionizing the art of his century with his paintings.
