8 May - 14 June 2009. The Wiener Festwochen was established in 1951 in the aftermath of the Second World War. Seen as both adventurous and reactionary at the time, the organisers were keen to demonstrate "Austria's will to survive" as well as promote its cultural activities. Today it is a firmly established annual cultural event. It produces spectacular shows featuring the best of Austrian and international plays and provides a forum for a universal appraisal of art in all its forms. Apart from being an artistic giant among cities, Vienna has recently been voted the world's best city in which to live.
