1 Oct-30 Nov 2006. Vienna celebrates its very own wine harvest and the advent of the Young Viennese wine with tastings, jazz brunches, vineyard guided tours, visits to top vintners and traditional dinners of Martini Goose. The highlight of the new vintage season is a trip to a local heuriger, or Viennese tavern, where winemakers sell their wares in an informal suburban garden setting, complete with traditional musicians and homemade Viennese delicacies. Identifiable by the spray of pine branches hanging above the entrance, heurigers are a simple and popular way to enjoy this years wine heuer means this year. Other events on offer during Wine in Wien include a musical boat trip on the Danube every Friday in October (www.heurigenmusik.at) and live music shows on the last Monday of each month at 10er-Marie (www.fuhrgassl-huber.at). Vienna still has around 700 hectares of vineyards within the city limits. A list of heurigers with addresses and websites can be found on the Vienna Tourist Board website. The Board offers vouchers entitling visitors to a free 1/8 litre of wine at restaurants where their bill exceeds 10.
