10 Aug-3 Sept 2006. Two of Basque composer Pablo Sorozbals finest works, Adis a la Bohemia (Goodbye to Bohemia) and Black, el Payaso (Black, the Clown) are presented by the Teatro Espaol in a double bill with musical direction by Manuel Gas. Goodbye to Bohemia, a 45-minute vignette, was first performed at Madrids Teatro Caldern in1933. Set in turn-of-the-century Madrid, with its bars, artists and men about town, this zarzuela includes popular dance rhythms like the chotis, habanera and pasodoble. Black the Clown was one of the last works to enter the zarzuela repertoire, first staged in Barcelona in 1942. Based on a story by journalist Francisco Serrano Anguita, this was one of Sorozbals most ambitious works, an ingenious allegory of art and nationalist politics. Ignacio Garca directs. Goodbye to Bohemia is directed by Mario Gas.

Admission 20-3 Tues-Sun at 20.30.
